Durham City Council picks who will finish the rest of Charlie Reece’s term
In a unanimous vote, the Durham City Council on Thursday picked Monique Holsey-Hyman to finish former member Charlie Reece’s remaining two years in office.
“It would honor (Charlie Reece’s) service and commitment,” Mayor Pro Tem Mark-Anthony Middleton said of Holsey-Hyman, when explaining his decision. “I think it would set us up for success moving forward.”
Other council members echoed Middleton’s sentiments, but also recognized the quality of all finalists, which included Nate Baker, Schnequa Nicole Diggs and Henry C. McKoy Jr.
“We have a lot of talent in this city,” council member Javiera Caballero said. “We should be very, very proud.”
Who is Monique Holsey-Hyman?
Holsey-Hyman is a Durham transplant hailing from the South Bronx, New York. She has lived in Durham since 2006 after joining the social work faculty at Raleigh’s Shaw University, North Carolina’s first historically Black college or university. She currently teaches at NCCU and Walden University.
Holsey-Hyman has served on the board of the Durham County Department of Social Services. In her public interview Tuesday, she emphasized her excitement about the city’s Community Safety Department hiring more social workers to handle “the issues that police sometimes may not be trained to do.”
