Police: Man hit in head with sledgehammer as brawl erupts at NC youth football game
A man was hit in the head with a sledgehammer during a brawl that erupted at a North Carolina football game pitting teams with 6-year-old players on Saturday, multiple media outlets reported.
An angry man crossed the field at Glenn High School in Kernersville to confront the other team, prompting arguments and fights among adults from both sides, WXII reported.
Some adults in the crowd had guns, but no one was shot, WFMY reported, citing the Winston-Salem Police Department.
The man hit in the head with the sledgehammer was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to WFMY, which also cited Winston-Salem Police.
Several other adults had “cuts and scrapes from the fighting,” WXII reported.
In a media statement, Winston-Salem/Forsythe County Schools said the teams weren’t part of the school system but had leased the field.
Winston-Salem and Kernersville police officers and Forsyth County deputies kept the crowds apart as they investigated the brawl, WGHP reported.
Police haven’t said if anyone faces arrest in the incident and haven’t disclosed if they know what prompted the dispute.
This is a developing story.
