81-year-old woman struck and killed by an Amtrak train in downtown Benson
Police say an 81-year-old woman was killed Monday afternoon when she reportedly stepped in front of an Amtrak train in downtown Benson.
Alice Anne Barefoot, 81, was struck at the crossing at Main Street shortly before 4 p.m., according to town spokesman Tyler Johnson. Barefoot was not carrying any identification, but police identified her Tuesday. They say she lived in Benson, less than a mile from where she was killed.
“According to reports, the woman walked into the path of the train at the crossing on Main Street,” Johnson wrote in a release Monday.
Barefoot may have had underlying health issues that were a factor, but Police Chief Greg Percy said Tuesday that “all indications point to Monday’s incident being a tragic accident.”
Barefoot was hit by Amtrak’s Palmetto, which was on its way from New York City to Savannah, Georgia. The train had just finished a stop in Selma and remained in Benson about an hour before continuing south to its next stop in Fayetteville.
