What’s open and closed on New Year’s Eve and Day in the Triangle? Here’s a list.
The new year is almost here, and while you might be busy making plans for how you’ll ring in 2023, you might also be wondering how the upcoming holiday will affect hours at stores and more around the Triangle.
New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, falls on a Sunday this year, and some businesses may be closed just on that day, while other services — such as government offices and the U.S. Postal Service — may observe the holiday on a different day.
To help you figure out what’s open and closed near you, The News & Observer has compiled a list of closures and adjusted hours at grocery stores, pharmacies, government offices and more around the Triangle.
Note: You might need to look up hours at specific stores or offices, but we’ve provided a link to do so where possible. When in doubt about a location’s hours, try calling ahead to confirm.
New Year’s hours for grocery stores in the Triangle
▪ Aldi — Aldi stores will be closed on New Year’s Day, Sunday, Jan. 1. Aldi stores will close at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31. Find specific hours at your local Aldi by searching for a store near you at aldi.us/stores.
▪ Costco — Costco stores will be closed on Sunday, Jan. 1. Costco stores in the Triangle will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31. Find specific hours at your local Costco by searching for a store near you at costco.com/warehouse-locations.
▪ Harris Teeter — Harris Teeter stores will operate under normal hours on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Find specific hours at a Harris Teeter near you at harristeeter.com/stores/search.
▪ Food Lion — Food Lion stores will be open under normal business hours on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Find specific hours at a Food Lion near you at foodlion.com/stores.
▪ Publix — All Publix stores will open at normal hours and close at 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Most Publix stores will close at 7 p.m. on New Year’s Day. Find specific hours at your local Publix by searching for a store near you at publix.com/locations.
▪ Target — Target stores will be open on New Year’s Eve, but most stores will close at 9 p.m. Target stores will be open regular hours on New Year’s Day. Find specific hours at your local Target by searching for a store near you at target.com/store-locator.
▪ Trader Joe’s — All Trader Joe’s stores will close at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and will be closed on New Year’s Day.
▪ Walmart — Most Walmart stores will be open regular hours on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Find specific hours at your local Walmart by searching for a store near you at walmart.com/store/finder.
▪ Wegmans — Wegmans stores will close at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Stores will reopen at 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
New Year’s hours for liquor stores in the Triangle
▪ Wake County ABC stores — Liquor stores in Wake County will be open normal hours, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., on New Year’s Eve. Stores will be closed on both Sunday, Jan. 1, and Monday, Jan. 2. Stores will reopen Jan. 3 and operate under normal hours.
▪ Durham County ABC stores — Durham County liquor stores will close at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Stores will be closed on Jan. 1 and Jan. 2 for the New Year’s Day holiday.
▪ Orange County ABC stores — Orange County liquor stores will be open regular hours, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., on New Year’s Eve. Stores will be closed on both Jan. 1 and Jan. 2.
▪ Johnston County ABC stores — Johnston County liquor stores will be open regular hours, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., on New Year’s Eve. Stores will be closed on both Jan. 1 and Jan. 2.
New Year’s hours for pharmacies in the Triangle
▪ CVS — Store and pharmacy hours vary by individual store. Find specific hours at your local CVS by searching for a store near you on cvs.com.
▪ Publix pharmacies — All Publix pharmacies will be closed on New Year’s Day.
▪ Walgreens — Walgreens stores will be open on New Year’s Eve and Day, but pharmacy hours at each store may vary. Find specific hours at your local Walgreens by searching for a store near you on walgreens.com.
New Year’s hours for the U.S. Postal Service
The U.S. Postal Service will be open on New Year’s Eve. The Postal Service says post office locations nationwide will be open and operating on this day, but hours may vary. Check hours at your local post office at tools.usps.com/find-location.htm.
The Postal Service will be closed on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, and Jan. 2.
▪ Post office locations will be closed on both days in observance of the postal holiday.
▪ Regular mail will not be delivered on either day. Mail will not be collected from blue drop-off boxes.
▪ Priority Mail Express mail will be delivered on these days, though deliveries are made only in limited locations and an extra fee for those deliveries may apply.
New Year’s hours for local government offices in the Triangle
▪ Wake County — The New Year’s Day holiday will affect various Wake County government services on Sunday, Jan. 1, and Monday, Jan. 2. County offices, libraries, parks, waste services and more will be closed on Sunday. County offices will be closed Monday, while some other services, including parks and libraries, will be open. ▪ Orange County — Orange County government offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2, for the New Year’s Day holiday. County offices, including the tax office, will be closed.
