Triangle power outage updates: Less than 22,000 remain without power as wind subsides

Plan ahead: Here’s how to be prepared for power outages in North Carolina

What to do at a traffic intersection when the power goes out

A blast of bitter arctic wind with gusts of more than 50 mph has left thousands across the Triangle without power Friday evening ahead of the Christmas weekend.

Here are local power outage numbers from Duke Energy as of 8:40 p.m.:

  • Wake County: 253 outages, 10,754 customers affected
  • Durham County: 28 outages, 1,809 customers affected
  • Orange County: 33 outages, 3,875 customers affected
  • Johnston County: 78 outages, 2,446 customers affected
  • Chatham County: 80 outages, 2,800 customers affected

The company estimated that power might not be fully restored in the Triangle until late Saturday night.

The hardest hit areas in Wake County included Northeast Raleigh, where as many as 29,000 people were without power at some point Friday. South of the Beltline along Garner Road in Southeast Raleigh, a reported 1,300 customers were affected. In Cary, at least 9,000 customers were without service.

Earlier Friday morning, an outage caused by fallen trees or limbs affected 1,587 customers in North Raleigh south of Interstate 540. That power was mostly restored by Friday afternoon.

In and around Durham and Hillsborough, roughly 8,000 customers were hit with outages, and another 4,000 customers were without power east of Pittsboro.

Duke Energy said gusty winds caused significant equipment damage. Conditions, including below-freezing temperatures and possibly slick roads, made restoration work difficult. “Continuing high winds could even mean additional outages through tomorrow,” it said.

Temperatures will continue to fall and are expected to remain bitterly cold through the weekend.

You can call Duke Energy at 800-POWERON (800-769-3766) or text “OUT” to 57801 to report outages or fallen power lines.
