Driver involved in single-vehicle crash that closed Penny Road in Cary has died

The driver of an SUV that crashed into a tree on Penny Road on Saturday afternoon has died, according to the Cary Police Department.

Miriam Carol Strickland, 75, of Raleigh appears to have suffered a medical emergency, causing her to lose control of the Ford Escape. Strickland and a passenger, Mary Ann Taylor, 81, were hospitalized Saturday.

Police announced Sunday that Strickland had died and that Taylor was in stable condition.

The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. at 11225 Penny Road, near Ten Ten Road. Penny remained closed between Ten Ten and Killingsworth Drive for about 2.5 hours.
