NC State reports student death off-campus, the 11th this school year

A North Carolina State University student died Monday after an accidental overdose, a university spokesman said Tuesday.

The student lived off campus, spokesman Mick Kulikowski confirmed.

It is the 11th N.C. State student death reported since the start of the 2022-23 school year. WRAL first reported the death Tuesday afternoon.

Of the 11 students who have died, five died by suicide, one in a car accident, three from natural causes and two that have been called “accidental deaths,” according to the university.

The latest student death is the second this March. On March 7, The Technician, N.C. State’s student newspaper, reported that a 37-year-old political science student had died of natural causes after “an extended illness.”

Kulikowski said the university does not alert or announce individual student deaths, or share their identities publicly.

However, students have previously been notified of some of the student deaths in statements from Chancellor Randy Woodson in the days following a cluster of student deaths.

As a result of the five student suicides this year, N.C. State issued a report last month to address the campus community’s mental health, making sweeping recommendations that affect everything from wellness days to screening students for mental health risks to how exams are scheduled.
