Human remains found in Cary trash fire, critically injured homeowner in RV nearby
A Cary man remained in critical condition Monday with what police say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound after firefighters found human remains burning in the man’s yard.
In a release Sunday afternoon, Cary Police spokesman Sgt. Kenric Alexander said a neighbor called the Cary Fire Department at 7:10 a.m. Sunday to report an illegal trash fire at 618 Dorset Drive. Firefighters put out the blaze, which was inside a fire pit, and found human remains in the debris.
The house at the address has been under major renovation, and residents have been staying in two RVs on the property.
Officers found the critically injured homeowner, whose name was not released, inside one of the RVs. He was taken to a hospital with a life-threatening injury from a single gunshot.
Police could not discern the identity, gender or race of the remains, which were taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner.
“There, we are hoping to learn the identity, cause, and time of death which will be vital pieces of information for investigators,” police said in a news update Monday. “We do not have a timeline for the ME’s process.”
Alexander said Sunday that police also found a woman on the property who was uninjured and has been talking with investigators.
Police are asking anyone with possible information to call 919-469-4012.
