Expert Q&A answered N&O reader questions about recycling in Raleigh. Watch now.
The News & Observer hosted a live Q&A this week in which Raleigh and Wake County recycling experts answered questions about recycling household materials in Raleigh.
The event was part of a recent N&O series of stories about recycling in Raleigh, showing readers how recycling in the City of Oaks works.
For that series we tracked the journey of a plastic bottle throughout North Carolina, seeing how the plastic gets melted and extruded into yarn. We went to Raleigh’s recycling plant to see machine and human sorters separate aluminum from cardboard and paper from plastic. We visited Wake County’s convenience centers and hazardous waste sites to learn how to dispose of those tricky-to-recycle items, like electronics, light bulbs and batteries.
The N&O’s Kimberly Cataudella, who reported the Raleigh recycling series, was joined by Bianca Howard and Maine Johnson, communications officers for Wake County and the City of Raleigh’s solid waste departments, respectively.
