Part of Raleigh’s Wade Avenue will be closed at least two nights this week
People who use Wade Avenue to get in and out of the center of Raleigh may find a section of it closed some nights this week.
Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation plan to close Wade between Capital Boulevard and St. Mary’s Street starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday for repaving work. They expect to reopen the road by 6 a.m. Thursday.
They plan to close that stretch of Wade again starting at 8 p.m. Friday through Saturday morning and may need to do it once more on Sunday night if there’s still more paving work to be done.
The contractors are leaving the road open on Thursday and Saturday nights because of expected traffic from the Carolina Hurricanes Eastern Conference Finals games at PNC Arena.
NCDOT is repaving Wade Avenue from Capital Boulevard out to Ridge Road. Contractors are doing the work at night and are mostly able to leave the road open as they work on individual lanes.
But the section between Capital and St. Mary’s is divided by a concrete median which makes it difficult to keep the road open while doing paving work. This stretch includes the Glenwood Avenue interchange.
“It is so tight there due to the curbs and median they opted for full closures that will allow that work to move much faster,” said NCDOT spokesman Aaron Moody.
