Suspect charged in grisly stabbing of Durham man in his home 2 years ago
Two years after a man was found fatally stabbed in his southwest Durham home, authorities have charged a suspect.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jonquel Marquis Tabron, 31, of Wilson, in the rural town of Snow Hill, according to a news release.
Tabron was charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the death of 35-year-old Dumar Andre Mosquera. He is being held in the Durham County jail on $2 million bail.
Officers dispatched July 1, 2021, to the 2300 block of Charles Street found Mosquera fatally wounded. He was pronounced dead by Emergency Medical Services personnel.
Police investigators indicate that Mosquera had invited Tabron to his home the night that he was killed.
Durham police declined to answer additional questions from The N&O surrounding the arrest of Tabron.
Family demanded justice
Mosquera had been living in the U.S. for nine years, having migrated from the Huila department of Colombia, reported Qué Pasa, a Spanish weekly in the Triangle.
“We want there to be justice, and we trust that the police will carry it out,” Paola Mosquera, his sister, told Qué Pasa in Spanish in July 2021.
According to family members, Mosquera was active with LILA, a Durham-based Latinx LGTBQ+ organization.
The N&O could not reach LILA representatives for an interview Wednesday afternoon.
The N&O has also reached out to Mosquera’s family.
Man stabbed 36 times
Durham police investigators learned through Mosquera’s security system that Tabron had entered Mosquera’s home with another man around after 11 p.m. June 30, 2021, police said previously.
An autopsy report from the Office of the Medical Examiner indicated Mosquera suffered 36 stab wounds and blunt force trauma.
The autopsy’s investigative report said the crime scene showed significant signs of struggle.
Mosquera’s suspected killer is also accused of stealing his 2017 Gray Toyota Tacoma with another man’s help. The vehicle was later found along Interstate 540 near the U.S. 64 exit in Knightdale.
Authorities have not charged another suspect in this case.
Tabron was convicted of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon in 2009 and possessing a weapon as an inmate in 2013, according to the state Department of Corrections.
