NCDOT contractor hit and killed while collecting litter near Fayetteville

A member of a litter cleanup crew was hit and killed by a car on Interstate 295 near Fayetteville on Tuesday morning.

The worker was employed by Lovin Contracting Co. of Robbinsville, which was hired by the N.C. Department of Transportation to collect trash along the highway.

The collision took place near the Murchison Road interchange, on the southern edge of Fort Liberty. Military police from the U.S. Army base are investigating. It’s not clear yet if the driver will be cited.

The worker’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, according to NCDOT.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the employee’s family,” the department said in a written statement. “This is a tragic reminder of how our employees and contractors risk their lives every day serving the public.”

In early May, another NCDOT contractor, Claude Taylor Bryant of Rocky Mount, was killed when an SUV crashed into a construction zone on Interstate 40 in Garner. The driver, Jeyson Alexander Murcia-Guillen, was charged with felony death by vehicle and several other crimes.
