Pedestrian dies after being hit by car on sidewalk in Durham

A woman walking on a sidewalk in Durham was killed Saturday when a car the street’s centerline, ran up onto the sidewalk and struck her, Durham police said.

The driver, Edward Earl Gilchrist Jr., 67, of Durham, was driving a 2003 Toyota Camry south on Avondale Drive when he crossed the centerline and drove onto the sidewalk at the intersection of Avondale and East Knox Street. He struck a woman who was walking north on the sidewalk.

The woman, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gilchrist was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to maintain lane control, driving left of center and driving while license revoked.

Police did not say why Gilchrist’s license had been revoked. They did not say if alcohol or drugs were involved.

The crash happened about 3:45 p.m. Saturday. Gilchrist was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Durham police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call investigator J.T. Rose at 919-475-4149.
