Aeromexico will begin making nonstop flights between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Mexico City starting next summer.

Aeromexico will fly daily between RDU and Benito Juárez International Airport starting July 1. The airline will use Embraer E-190 jets with 99 seats.

The airline plans to fly the route year around.

Aeromexico will operate the flights in a partnership with Delta Air Lines. The two airlines recently announced an expansion of joint flights between the U.S. and Mexico. Delta is routinely one of the busiest airlines at RDU, handling about 28% of all passengers; this will be Aeromexico’s debut in the Triangle.

The airline qualifies for RDU’s incentive program for new carriers, including waived landing and facilities fees and up to $225,000 in marketing support over two years.

The flag carrier of Mexico, Aeromexico becomes the 17th airline doing business at RDU and the third new international airline to announce service from the Triangle in recent months. Air France recently took over the Paris route from Delta, and Lufthansa will begin flying nonstop between RDU and Frankfurt, Germany, next summer.

“RDU continues to attract new airlines and international destinations because of the Triangle’s vibrant global community and status as a hub for education, technology and great quality of life,” RDU’s president and CEO, Michael Landguth, said in a written statement. “We are excited to welcome Aeromexico to North Carolina and provide travelers with direct access to Mexico City and Aeromexico’s extensive network of flights.”

Mexico City will be RDU’s ninth international destination and the second in Mexico, after Cancun. Aeromexico becomes the sixth airline based outside the U.S. to do business at RDU, after Bahamasair, Air Canada, Air France, Icelandair and Lufthansa.
