Breeze Airways says it will fly nonstop between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and three additional cities in the Northeast this summer, including the only service to Burlington, Vermont.

Breeze will have competition from Frontier Airlines to the other two cities: Syracuse, New York, and Portland, Maine.

Both low-cost carriers cater to leisure travelers and tend to add flights to northern destinations in the summer and warmer ones in the winter.

Breeze will fly to Burlington and Syracuse on Thursdays and Sundays beginning May 23 and to Portland on Mondays and Fridays starting May 24. The airline will fly each route at least through Labor Day and perhaps beyond, according to spokesman Gareth Edmondson-Jones.

Breeze made its debut at RDU a year ago, with flights to three places. With the addition of three new cities in the Northeast, the airline is now selling tickets from the Triangle to 15 destinations.

The start-up airline began flying in the spring of 2021, becoming the fifth carrier started by industry veteran David Neeleman. Starting in the 1980s, Neeleman founded Morris Air, which was bought and absorbed by Southwest, as well as JetBlue, WestJet of Canada and Azul Brazilian Airlines.

Breeze often flies routes that other airlines do not. From RDU, it is currently the only airline flying nonstop to Hartford, Connecticut; Providence, Rhode Island; Jacksonville, Florida; Islip on Long Island and Columbus and Akron in Ohio. This spring, it becomes the only carrier with nonstop service to San Diego and White Plains, in suburban Westchester County, New York.
