A motorcyclist was shot to death by a Sampson County sheriff’s deputy Saturday morning after a police chase ended in a crash.

ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner, reports that the deputy was chasing the motorcyclist over a registration violation, citing a press release from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies saw that the motorcyclist was carrying a firearm when the chase began. It started on US 421 near Clinton, and ended when the motorcyclist lost control and crashed near Kitty Fork Road, ABC11 reports. After the crash, the motorcyclist drew his handgun and was then shot by the deputy.

The motorcyclist was taken to Sampson Regional Medical Center, where he died, ABC11 reported.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
