Alamance County woman reported missing during Chantal rainfall found dead in pond

A 23-year-old woman reported missing during Chantal-related rainfalls was found Tuesday in a submerged vehicle in a pond, the Graham Police Department reported.

Concerned family members reported Hajar Hassib missing on Monday, the day after the deluge caused flooding in Central North Carolina. She was last seen Sunday night as she was returning to her residence in Graham, according to a news release.

Her location was traced south of Mebane to the area of South Jim Minor Road and Graham Smith Drive.

Tuesday, dive teams with Alamance County Rescue found her in a vehicle that was submerged in a pond.

A spokesperson with the Graham Police Department didn’t confirm that her death is attributed to Chantal, referring further questions to the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, who is conducting the death investigation.

At least five deaths have been attributed to the storm, which arrived in the Triangle as a tropical depression.

A second death occurred in Alamance County Sunday night at the intersection of Jones Drive and Calloway Drive in Mebane, WXII12 reports. Citing the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, the TV station said a 911 caller said he and a friend were driving in separate vehicles but became separated.

The man was found in his vehicle off the roadway covered in running water. His name hasn’t been released.
