Pedestrian in ‘dark clothing’ struck, killed in area ‘with poor lighting,’ police say

Raleigh police identified a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle on Hammond Road. No charges have been filed.

A 57-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a motorist on Hammond Road near the I-40 West on-ramp in Raleigh on Friday night, police said.

Raleigh police identified the pedestrian as James Patterson. No address was given.

“The preliminary investigation suggests Mr. Patterson was walking in the travel lane when he was struck, wearing dark clothing in an area with poor lighting,” Raleigh police said in a news release. They responded to the accident at 9:22 p.m. Friday.

No charges have been against the driver, who was not identified. The driver remained at the scene and completed several tests, police said.

“Speed and impairment are not believed to have contributed to this incident,” police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
