Police investigating crash in Southwest Raleigh that left 1 dead, several injured
Police are investigating a fatal crash that took place in Southwest Raleigh Friday night that left one person dead and sent the drivers and passengers of the two cars involved to the hospital.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Trailwood Drive and Tryon Road, the Raleigh Police Department said in a news release Friday night.
Officers responded to the scene shortly after 8:30 p.m. and found a Kia Forte sedan that appeared to be traveling east on Tryon Road had collided with a white Honda Accord in the intersection.
One passenger of the Honda Accord, identified by police Saturday morning as Lina Fernanda Ramos Velasco, 39, died as a result of the crash, RPD said.
Drivers of both vehicles and all other passengers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said in the release.
Police said Saturday that a preliminary investigation showed the crash happened when the Honda Accord, which was traveling west on Tryon Road and was trying to make a U-turn at Trailwood Drive, failed to yield to the Kia Forte.
The Kia, which was traveling east on Tryon Road, had a green light for its direction of travel, police said.
Drivers of both cars were checked for impairment and “none was detected,” RPD said.
No charges had been filed as of Saturday morning, police said.
