Triangle ‘dodged a bullet’ with Hurricane Humberto, Tropical Depression Nine

Update: Find the latest Humberto and Imelda coverage here.

The Triangle will feel minimal impact from Hurricane Humberto and the unnamed tropical depression still moving north, sparing the region the severe weather feared from a pair of storms.

Humberto remains a major hurricane with Category 4 strength, forecasters said Sunday, but it remains too far out to sea for much impact on land.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Nine continues to move north from Cuba, but the more powerful Humberto is pulling it farther east and away from the coast.

“The impacts are certainly diminishing,” said meteorologist Andrew Kren with the National Weather Service in Raleigh. “It looks like we dodged a bullet.

Rain, rough surf

Forecasters expect rain in the Triangle overnight Sunday and into Monday, accumulating maybe an inch.

Outside of that, Kren said, expect some gusts that “won’t be overly high.” There is no tornado threat.

The possibility of rough surf and rip currents remain along the North Carolina coast.
