6 injured, dozens displaced in major Morrisville apartment fire. What we know

One person was taken to the hospital and five people were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a Morrisville apartment complex on Monday night, Feb. 23.

The three-alarm fire ignited around 6 p.m. at the Camden Westwood Apartments at 2100 Summit Ridge Loop, according to a town news release. Thirty apartments in one building and roughly 70 residents were affected.

Morrisville town spokesperson Erin Hudson said the person taken to the hospital was headed to the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill.

As of Tuesday morning, the town had not released an update on that person’s condition or any information about what may have caused the fire.

The fire appeared to be largely contained shortly before 8 p.m., but the third-floor apartments appeared to have sustained major damage.

One resident told ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner, that he saw the second story of the building on fire and called 911. Another resident, Ashley Viers, said the fire “shot up,” and she heard some residents on the third-floor balcony yelling for help.

Some residents barely had time to get out

“That’s my apartment on the top floor. All my stuff,” John Walters told ABC11. “I thought I smelled wax burning. So I looked over the deck like, where’s the smell coming from? And I saw smoke coming up from the first-floor apartment. And I could see the reflection of flames on the ground. And oh, God, I ran back in the apartment, ... got my wife ... out of the bathroom, grabbed my wallet and keys.”

They escaped with just “the clothes on our backs,” Walters said. “So it’s all lost.”

The building had sprinklers and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Office of the State Fire Marshall, the Wake County Fire Marshall and the Morrisville Fire Marshall are investigating.

Several agencies responded, including Morrisville, Apex, and Cary fire crews. The Red Cross and Neighbor Up are accepting donations to help those who had been displaced.

Previous fires at Camden Westwood

At least two previous fires have broken out at the complex, according to ABC11.

A fire happened there in March 2019, displacing 35 people.

Another fire broke out there in 2009, displacing 50 people.

Monday’s fire happened the same night as a fatal shooting in a shopping center about a mile away, prompting Mayor TJ Cawley to issue a statement.

“Monday evening, our community experienced two very serious and separate incidents: a devastating apartment fire at Camden Westwood that displaced dozens of residents, and a tragic shooting in Park West Village,” he said. “Our hearts are with everyone affected.”

“While these events are rare in our community, they underscore the importance of maintaining strong, well-funded public safety departments. I am incredibly proud of our nationally accredited police and fire professionals for their courage and commitment to serving our residents in moments of crisis.”
