Dreamville Records, founded by North Carolina native and rapper J. Cole, will be back in the Triangle for a major cultural event. Just not the one you might be thinking of.
The music label will enter a men’s team, Dreamville FC, into The Soccer Tournament, the “world’s premier 7v7” tournament back in Cary for the third year with a $1 million prize for the winners.
“Dreamville has built something incredibly special in Raleigh and beyond, and to see that creativity translate onto the field in Cary is going to be a lot of fun for fans,” said The Soccer Tournament CEO Jon Mugar. “We love bringing together people from across the sports and entertainment world who share our same passion and energy, making Dreamville a perfect fit for TST.”
Cole’s direct involvement wasn’t mentioned, but a news release states the team will be “supported by key figures from the Dreamville organization, bringing a competitive spirit and creative vision from the music industry to the pitch in Cary.”
The team’s roster will feature “top small-sided talent from around the world,” who play in soccer matches with fewer than the 11 standard players, and the players will be announced on social media at a later time.
This isn’t the first time Cole’s entered the sports arena. He announced earlier this year he’d signed a contract with the Nanjing Monkey Kings of the Chinese Basketball Association, The Charlotte Observer reported.
He also previously played with the Rwanda Patriots in the Basketball Africa League and with the Scarborough Shooting Stars in the Canadian Elite Basketball league, The Observer reported.
What’s the latest with Dreamville’s music festival?
The announcement comes at the end of April, when the Dreamville Music Festival is usually held at Dix Park in Raleigh.
On social media, the Dreamville team previously said the 2025 show would be their last, The News & Observer reported previously. But then, on the eve of the fifth festival, city leaders touted a four-year deal for a new music festival, under the Dreamville label.
In early March, Raleigh Public Information Officer Julia Milstead said they “are discussing other possible dates with the organizers, but don’t have a firm date at this point.”
Milstead confirmed there was no update on the festival as of Tuesday, April 28.
The Soccer Tournament begins on Wednesday, May 27, and ends with championship games on Monday, June 1, at WakeMed Soccer Park, 101 Soccer Park Drive.
