This weekend’s Garmin Marathon Durham could cause travel disruptions for the city’s drivers.

All four races — a full and half marathon, 10K and 5K — will begin Saturday, May 2 at American Tobacco Campus and finish at Duke University’s Wallace Wade Stadium. The longest three races start at 7 a.m., and the 5K starts at 7:20 a.m.

Most of the race courses will stick to Durham roads, but marathon participants will run much of the latter half of their race on the Third Fork Creek Trail and American Tobacco Trail. The half marathon course also uses some parts of the American Tobacco Trail.

Almost all road and/or lane closures are rolling closures and will reopen once the last runner crosses through that area, Garmin public relations specialist Elliott Scott told The News & Observer in an email.

“This should ensure drivers can get through intersections, especially the early mile closures, in a timely manner,” Scott said.

There is a time limit to the races, though. Runners have 6.5 hours to finish the marathon and 4 hours to finish the half marathon.
