Emergency crews in Chatham County called off the search Sunday for a teenage swimmer who went missing during a Fourth of July outing on Jordan Lake.

Sheriff’s deputies said Sunday-evening thunderstorms forced a temporary halt, but the search will resume Monday morning.

“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” Sheriff Mike Roberson said in a news release. “We remain committed to this search and are grateful for the dedicated efforts of all the agencies and personnel assisting us.”

The teen got into trouble in the water while swimming away from the family’s boat at roughly 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Searched combed the lake until late Saturday, started again Sunday and stopped when heavy rains struck at about 4 p.m

The sheriff’s office thanked the North Chatham Fire Department, Alamance County Rescue, FirstHealth EMS, Chatham County Emergency Management, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and North Carolina State Parks for helping.
