The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an elderly woman’s death — and the role three dogs may have played in it.

Deputies responded to a home in the 200 block of Alston Road near Apex at 11 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a report of a possible dog attack, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

They found 85-year-old Betty Alston dead outside the residence, the Sheriff’s Offic said. A family member found three dogs near her body and chased them away, according to the preliminary investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office said the dogs “have since been secured” and pose no ongoing threat to the community. The N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office is on the scene to help determine the cause of death.
