Man struck and killed by train in downtown Durham. Avoid these streets.
A pedestrian was struck and killed by a train in downtown Durham Tuesday afternoon, the Durham Police Department said.
Officers responded shortly after 1:30 p.m. and found a man beside the tracks. The man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred at the intersection of West Ramseur and South Corcoran streets, police said in an email. A stopped Norfolk Southern train car is seen at the intersection in a photo tweeted by police.
Several intersections downtown are expected to remain closed into the evening due to the stopped train, affecting evening and afternoon commutes.
The stopped train is blocking crossings from Fayetteville Road to Chapel Hill Street, according to Gina Rozier, spokesperson with Downtown Durham, Inc.
Motorists are advised to use Gregson and Fayetteville streets to reach areas south of downtown, police said in a tweet.
