Update: Court records now show the suspect, Ahmad Dukes, turned 18 on Dec. 19 and was moved into the Durham County Detention Center. He was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of first-degree murder Sept. 16.

A teenager was arrested last week in the March 2023 fatal shooting of a young man on Hillsborough Road in Durham, police announced Wednesday.

It is the fourth arrest in the case, though charges against another juvenile previously arrested have since been dropped.

The 17-year-old was taken into custody during an Aug. 15 search in the 4900 block of Old Page Road, according to a news release. His name was not released because of his age.

He was charged through a juvenile petition with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the March 14, 2023, death of 22-year-old Mario Canseco Lopez, the release said.

Lopez was shot outside the Subway shop on Hillsborough Road and ran to a nearby tobacco and vape shop where he collapsed, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner. He died later at a local hospital.

It happened near the intersection with Cole Mill Road, home to a Cookout, Domino’s Pizza and laundromat, The N&O reported.

“He was born on July 2, 2002 and will always be remembered as very hardworking and intelligent,” his mother, Claudia Lopez, said on a GoFundMe online fundraiser to help with his funeral last year. “We want to give Mario the memorial he deserves, to honor his memory and to say our last goodbyes.”

2 others teens still face charges

Two other teenagers also face charges in Lopez’s death, the release said.

A 15-year-old boy is in custody on a charge of manslaughter, while a 17-year-old boy was previously arrested and released on a charge of motor vehicle theft, according to the release.

Charges against another 15-year-old previously arrested in the case were dropped, police told The N&O on Thursday.
