A pedestrian was hit and killed by a freight train east of downtown Durham on Tuesday morning, according to Durham police.

Police say Ronnie Earl Shaw was hit by a Norfolk Southern train near where South Alston Avenue meets East Pettigrew Street at about 5:20 a.m. Shaw, 42, was taken to a hospital where he later died, according to police.
