73-year-old Durham man killed trying to cross highway at night

A 73-year-old pedestrian died at the scene after he tried to cross U.S. 15-501 and was hit by a car Monday night.

It happened just before 9 p.m. when Lester Arthur Battle of Durham stepped over a guardrail in the median of the highway and into the path of a Honda Civic, police said in a news release.

Battle was struck at mile marker 108, which is near the Hillsborough Road exit where the northbound and southbound lanes are separated by the grassy median.

The driver stopped and called 911, police said, but Battle was declared dead at the scene.

Police do not expect to file any charges against the driver, according to the news release.
