Man charged with murder in fatal shooting at Durham food truck

Police have charged a man with murder in a fatal shooting that occurred on N.C. 55 in southern Durham on Friday afternoon.

Officers responded around 12:30 p.m. to the 4200 block of Garrett Road for an “unknown police problem,” according to a news release.

Once they arrived, they were told there was a possible shooting victim in the 2600 block of N.C. 55.

When they got there, they found 35-year-old Arturo Velazquez Chavez, who had been shot at or near a food truck, media outlets reported. Emergency Medical Services pronounced him dead on the scene.

The shooting near the highway’s intersection with Wynne Road, appears to have been an isolated incident, police said, suggesting the suspect and victim knew each other.

On Friday night police announced they had charged Jeisson Munoz-Valencia, 32 of Durham with murder in this case.

As of Jan. 18, the latest statistics available, a total of nine people had been shot this year in Durham, two of them fatally.

That compares to six people shot, one of them fatally, by the same time last year, and 11 the year before when there no fatalities yet.

Anyone with any information about Friday’s shooting is asked to call Investigator C. Bernock at 919-560-4440 ext. 29414.
