Officers responded to a gunshot-wound call at 7:18 p.m. in the 3700 block of Hillsborough Road and found a man who had been shot.

The incident occurred at the SureStay Plus by Best Western at 3710 Hillsborough Road, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.

Police tried to resuscitate the man until paramedics arrived, according to a Durham Police Department release, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released.

Hotel guests told ABC11 said they were stunned.

Clay Edison, who has lived at the hotel for over a year, said the shooting took place near the front office.

“It breaks my heart because when you have people who are leading a life of crime and, you know, you just wonder what’s going to happen next,” he said..

Police provided no information about a possible suspect, motive or other details.

Violent crime down in Durham

As of Aug. 16, there had been 24 homicides in Durham this year, slightly down from 25 and 27 by the same time in each of the two previous years, police statistics show.

All told, violent crime in the city — which also includes rape, robbery and aggravated assault — is down 19% compared to last year.
