Chapel Hill man struck and killed by an Amtrak train near Duke’s campus

A man was hit and killed by a passenger train while walking on the railroad tracks near Duke University’s East Campus on Tuesday evening.

Dashiell Garni Warren, 27, of Chapel Hill was pronounced dead at the site of the collision near Ninth and Pettigrew streets, according to Durham police.

Amtrak’s Piedmont was traveling eastbound toward downtown about 5:39 p.m. when the train’s operator saw Warren and blew the horn, according to police. Warren failed to yield, police said.

The rail crossings at Ninth Street/Erwin Road and nearby Broad Street/Swift Avenue were closed after the collision. The Piedmont train was 2 hours and 55 minutes late departing Durham for Cary and Raleigh, according to Amtrak.
