An 18-year-old died early Sunday morning after hitting a deer in Johnston County, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Officials said Ivan Pastrana, of Angier, was traveling east at high speed on Interstate 40 when he struck a deer and went off the road into the center median.

He then struck a guard rail, went airborne and hit a bridge pole, said Trooper Brandon Johnson.

The crash occurred near mile marker 314, according to the Highway Patrol.

Johnson said Pastrana was going an estimated 100 mph and was not wearing a seatbelt.

Troopers were called to the scene around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, but medical examiners estimated that Pastrana had died around 3:30 a.m., Johnson said.

He was a 2021 graduate of West Johnston High School, according to the school district.

Grief counseling and support services were offered to students on Monday, officials said.
