Three dead after wrong-way crash on I-40 in Johnston County, media outlets report
Three people were killed Wednesday night in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 40 in Johnston County, media outlets report.
The crash occurred just before 10 p.m. near Mile Marker 315 near Benson, reported ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.
The driver of a Toyota Tundra was heading the wrong way when they struck a Dodge Durango, North Carolina State Highway Patrol officials told ABC11.
They were going east in the westbound lanes of I-40, WRAL reported.
After the crash, the Durango spun and crashed into a concrete barrier, catching on fire, ABC11 reported. The driver of the Tundra was ejected from the vehicle, according to media outlets.
The driver of the Tundra and two people in the Durango were killed.
Officials told ABC11 that the crash occurred in a construction zone, making it impossible for the Durango driver to get out of the way of the Tundra.
The N&O has asked Highway Patrol for further details about the crash.
