1 person shot, killed at Zebulon convenience store

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a person was shot and killed at a convenience store in Zebulon.

Deputies were called to the Shop-N-Go convenience store at 13597 N.C. 39 at 4:47 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release.

A store clerk told ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner, that the incident started when a regular customer ran into the store asking for help.

The clerk said he got a gun they keep in the store for protection and he went outside and found a man trying to break into cars.

The clerk told ABC11 the man had a can of pepper spray and forced his way into the store, where there was a confrontation and the man was shot.

Authorities have not confirmed that account or released the dead man’s name.

“The case remains under investigation while detectives consult with the District Attorney’s Office,” the release stated.

In 2016, a 29-year-old clerk at Shop-N-Go 39 was killed and a second employee was also shot during an armed robbery.

Police arrested two men in connection with the shooting in the months after it took place.
