UNC Wilmington student killed by train in Clayton. What police say happened.

A college student from Wendell was killed in an accident with a train in Clayton, police said Wednesday.

EllaRyan Marie Miller, 21, died Tuesday evening after stepping in front of an Amtrak train, according to a news release from Clayton Police Chief Greg Tart.

Miller, a UNC Wilmington student, was doing a summer internship in downtown Clayton, the release said. She was leaving her job around 5 p.m. and walking to her car, parked in a nearby lot on Front Street, when she crossed the railroad tracks on foot and was struck by the train.

The train was part of the Carolinian route, which runs daily from New York to Charlotte with stops in Richmond and Raleigh, according to Amtrak’s website. The train was traveling west toward Raleigh at the time of the accident, the release said.

Miller was pronounced dead at the scene, and “at this point we believe it was a very tragic accident,” Tart said in the release.

Miller was interning at RiverWild, a leadership and development company specializing in real estate and construction, according to her LinkedIn profile. She was a rising junior studying communications with a minor in entrepreneurship, the company’s website shows.
