Drivers hit the brakes on I-40 when an armored car starts losing money
Money began flying loose from an armored truck on Interstate 40 near the U.S. 1 interchange Thursday morning, and drivers pulled off the highway to go for the cash, authorities reported.
Raleigh police received a report of money being picked up by drivers who had stopped along the eastbound lanes of I-40 near the U.S. 1 exit. All of the stopped vehicles and most of the money were gone by the time officers arrived, police said.
The armored truck from Loomis was traveling on I-40 when its back door “inadvertently opened as an employee inside the truck was trying to better secure it,” police said.
A “brick” of money fell from the truck, scattering $20 bills when it hit the road. Police didn’t say how many $20 bills were in a brick.
No wrecks or injuries were reported.
Some people have contacted Loomis and returned money they picked up. Anyone else wishing to return money can call 919-469-5992 or return it to Loomis at 125 Nova Dr. in Morrisville.
