Next time you venture out, you’ll find a new stretch of McCrimmon Parkway has opened
A new stretch of McCrimmon Parkway has opened, allowing drivers to go between Aviation Parkway and Airport Boulevard without getting on N.C. 54.
The 1.6-mile extension of McCrimmon is four lanes wide, with a median down the middle and sidewalks on both sides. It connects with Evans Road at Aviation Parkway, where the intersection has been expanded with new turn lanes.
The new road also means drivers can get between Aviation Parkway and Davis Drive without going through the center of Morrisville, where roads are two lanes wide and traffic frequently backs up.
The opening follows the completion of a leg of McCrimmon that the Town of Morrisville built, between N.C. 54 and Perimeter Park Drive. It opened last August.
The N.C. Department of Transportation has more work planned for McCrimmon Parkway. The state plans to build a bridge to carry the road over N.C. 54 and the adjoining railroad tracks and widen McCrimmon between N.C. 54 and Davis Drive.
NCDOT had planned to begin construction on both projects next spring. But the sharp drop in gas tax payments and other revenue caused by the coronavirus pandemic will likely force the department to delay them, said spokesman Marty Homan.
