Raleigh cancels early summer camps because of the coronavirus
The city of Raleigh has canceled its summer camps through at least June 26.
The decision was made on the recommendation “of state and local leadership” to keep children and staff members safe from the spread of COVID-19, according to a city news release.
Raleigh offers dozens of camps throughout the summer, starting June 8. The city will announce by June 15 whether camps after June 26 will also be canceled. Camps last through Aug. 21.
Gov. Roy Cooper ordered school buildings closed for the rest of the academic year due to the spread of the coronavirus, leaving some parents asking if summer camps would also be cut.
Day camps that social distance are allowed during one Phase One of Cooper’s reopening plan for the state.
“We will take into consideration the ability to manage our camp program while maintaining small group sizes, following social distancing guidelines and implementing other measures recommended by the (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention),” according to the city’s website.
The city is also looking for alternative camp sites for Ravenscroft Academy, which restricted summer access to outside groups.
