2-year-old boy dies after being hit by vehicle on Christmas Day, Garner police say
A 2-year-old boy died Tuesday after being hit by a vehicle in Garner on Saturday night, police said.
Officers were dispatched to the crash near the 1600 block of Woodland Road shortly after 10 p.m. on Christmas Day, Capt. Mike McIver of the Garner Police Department previously told The News & Observer.
The 2-year-old was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh with life-threatening injuries, McIver said in an email. As of Sunday, the child had been transferred to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, where he remained in critical condition.
On Tuesday, the child died as a result of his injuries, Garner police said in an update.
A preliminary investigation by police indicated that the child ran onto the road while his family loaded their own vehicle, which was parked on the shoulder of Woodland Road, Lt. Kevan Anderson said.
The investigation also showed that neither speed nor impairment were factors in the crash, Anderson said.
“This is a truly tragic incident,” Anderson said. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the child and our thoughts and prayers to all involved.”
Everyone involved in the crash remained at the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation, Anderson said.
He added that the department will wait to complete its investigation before consulting with the Wake County District Attorney’s office to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
