Yappy hour? Dix Park is going to the dogs.

Dix Park is opening its new dog park this weekend.

Where you take your dog at Dix Park is changing.

The popular dog park has moved, with the city planning a “Yappy Hour” celebration to mark the official opening this Saturday.

Instead of the athletic field off Biggs Drive, dog owners will now take their pets to a new park between the Big Field and the sunflower field off Umstead Drive.

More than 300 dogs a day typically visit the dog park, with even bigger crowds on weekends.

The new park will be slightly larger, with two sections for large dogs and one section for smaller ones.

It also will have water stations and natural shade — both missing from the old dog park.

The cost of the dog park is $65,000 to $75,000, being paid by the Dix Park Conservancy.

The city will celebrate the opening with a four-hour event featuring food and beer vendors, music and vendors for pets. People are encouraged to bring their pets and lawn chairs.
