I-440 crash leaves man dead, traffic backed up in Raleigh after highway reopens, officials say
A man died early Wednesday morning after being hit by a car while walking on Interstate 440 in Raleigh, according to the city’s police department.
The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of I-440 on the bridge over Lake Boone Trail, said Stacy Smith, a Raleigh police spokeswoman.
Investigators said the crash happened around 4 a.m., according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.
Multiple cars struck the man, Smith said. She declined to say whether anyone would be charged, or what led to the crash.
Authorities have not released the name of the man who died in the crash.
The crash led I-440 west to close between Lake Boone Trail and Wade Avenue, police said.
It has since reopened, according to Marty Homan, a North Carolina Department of Transportation spokesman.
Homan said the queue was five miles long and traffic would remain backed up in the area for about an hour after it reopened around 9:20 a.m.
