Wake takes meeting online after at least 2 county commissioners get COVID
The Wake County commissioners will move a Monday work session online after the board’s chair and vice chair caught COVID-19.
“Due to some board members experiencing COVID-19, we’ve opted to take the right step to protect the health and safety of staff and the public, and move the meeting to an online platform,” Dara Demi, Wake County’s communication director, wrote in an email.
The email did not say how many commissioners had tested positive for the coronavirus, but Chair Sig Hutchinson and Vice Chair Shinica Thomas both confirmed to The News & Observer that they’ve tested positive.
“The good news is that when I started showing symptoms at 8 o’clock Saturday morning, I went to my WakeMed urgent care app and had a telemedicine appointment at 10 a.m. and was in the ER getting an infusion by 1 p.m.,” Hutchinson said. “WakeMed and modern medicine are amazing and within 24 hours from symptoms I already had an infusion completed. And I’m feeling better on Monday.”
Commissioner Maria Cervania tweeted she tested positive for COVID-19 on May 2. On Monday, she said she was feeling better and her last day of observation was Sunday.
The public can watch the commissioners’ 3 p.m. virtual work session at wake.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx.
