About 5,000 gallons of partially treated sewage spilled early Thursday morning at the city’s Neuse River Resource Recovery Facility.

The spill at 5:30 a.m. was caused by a “mechanical equipment failure” at the facility used by the city to treat wastewater and sewage, according to a city of Raleigh news release. The city did not immediately follow-up about what caused the failure or what failed.

The spill was stopped by Raleigh Water staff at 8 a.m.

The sewage was partially treated at the facility and reached the Neuse River, according to the news release. No vegetative damage or fish kill were observed.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
