Two sewage spills totaling nearly 7.500 gallons leaked an unknown amount of waste into local creeks Thursday, Raleigh Water reported Friday morning.

The spills come after a contractor’s mistake caused a 240,315-gallon spill in Fuquay-Varina from a new housing development, The News & Observer reported.

Raleigh reported a 6,059-gallon spill on Jeffrey Creek Lane and said “an undetermined amount” possibly reached Perry Creek in the Neuse Basin. The spill came from an 8-inch PVC sewer pipe, and work repairing the pipe remained underway as of Friday morning.

The second spill occurred on Wendell Boulevard in Wendell, with about 400 gallons of a 1,440-gallon spill reaching Buffalo Creek in the Buffalo Basin. The spill was from a manhole and affected the flow of an 8-inch sewer pipe.

There were no reported dead fish or vegetative damage in either spill.

Raleigh provides water and sewer services to about 630,000 residents in the Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon areas.

There were 66 sewage spills in Raleigh’s system in 2023.
