2 brothers charged with murder of 24-year-old woman in eastern Wake County
The Wake County Sheriff’s Office has charged two brothers and identified a third suspect in the killing of a 24-year-old woman in June.
Kahlil Hahson Atkinson, 18, of Raleigh and Xavier Don Ameche Atkinson, 19, of Knightdale were arrested Tuesday. They were both charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Serenity Spencer, arrest warrants show.
Investigators have obtained a juvenile petition for the third suspect, who remains at large, the Sheriff’s Office said in an update Wednesday afternoon.
Spencer was found with a gunshot wound around 10:40 p.m. June 30 when sheriff’s deputies responded to a home on Hodge Road in Wendell.
People were gathered inside and outside when the shooting occurred, but investigators don’t yet know the motive for the shooting, according to the update.
Spencer was taken to the hospital, where she died, the Sheriff’s Office said the next day.
The Atkinsons are being held in jail without bail, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.
A relative of the brothers stood up during one of their court hearings Wednesday and asked the judge if they could be assigned a bond that could possibly let them get out of jail, the news station reported. The judge said not on a Class-A Felony in District Court.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information that could help investigators to call 919-856-6911
