Detour ahead: Falls of Neuse Road bridges will close over the next couple of months
The twin bridges that carry Falls of Neuse Road over the Neuse River in North Raleigh will be closed in one direction or the other over the next two months, as contractors make repairs.
The city will send drivers headed to and from Wakefield or Wake Forest on a detour that uses Wakefield Pines Drive and the two-lane Old Falls of Neuse Road.
Another option to avoid the construction zone would be Capital Boulevard.
The work was to begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, when northbound Falls of Neuse was to close at Old Falls of Neuse Road. The city announced Friday afternoon that the closure had been postponed until 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28.
The northbound bridge is expected to remain closed for about four weeks, according to the city.
The southbound lanes will remain open during that time. When work on the northbound side is finished, the southbound lanes will close at Wakefield Pines Drive, except for local traffic. That closure is also expected to last about four weeks.
The bridges over the river were built in 2010. Among other things, contractors will repair chipped concrete, replace curbs, gutters and sidewalk panels and put down new pavement. They’ll also level the approach slabs at either end of the bridge to, in the city’s words, “enhance the ridability” of the road.
