Girl dies after being struck by garbage truck in Cary crosswalk, police say
A 13-year-old girl has died after being struck by a garbage truck Friday, Nov. 29, in a crosswalk in Cary, police said.
The incident occurred about 10 a.m. as the girl was crossing at the intersection of High House Road and Cornerstone Drive, according to a news release.
Officials at Davis Drive Middle School in Cary identified her as eighth-grade student Shiyu “Chloe” Hua.
Hua was walking in the crosswalk when she was hit, police said. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.
Davis Drive Middle School Principal Michael Hokenberg said Hua, who had been named the Eighth Grade Student of the Month in October, “made a profound and lasting impact on our school.”
“This devastating loss will be deeply felt by our school community, and our hearts are with Chloe’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved her,” Hokenberg wrote in a statement shared with parents.
Adrian T. Holt, 57, of Raleigh, was arrested at the scene and faces charges of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to yield, failure to reduce speed, and carrying a concealed weapon, the release stated..
He was driving a trash truck from Wall Recycling, a private contractor serving the Cornerstone Shopping Center.
