Wake County law enforcement has responded to a report of a possible explosive at a home.

A bomb squad safely removed an unexploded military ordnance Tuesday from the yard of a Wake County home.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office made the announcement at 7:15 p.m., several hours after a bomb squad was brought in to investigate a report of a possible explosive.

The Wake New Hope Fire Department and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office were called about a possible unexploded military ordnance found on Forestville Road near Raleigh about 1:45 p.m., according to a news release.

The home was evacuated “out of an abundance of caution” and the Raleigh Police Bomb Squad was called, according to the release.

The 722nd Ordnance Company from Fort Bragg responded to the home and discovered a 30 millimeter training round, the Sheriff’s Office said. The round was exposed in a chicken coop after recent rainfall.

The round was taken back to Fort Bragg, where it was safely detonated, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Wake New Hope Fire Chief Ronny Mizell said a resident was doing yardwork when he discovered the ordnance, ABC11 reported.

The family was evacuated, but the Sheriff’s Office could not say how many people were evacuated as of Tuesday afternoon.
