Raleigh Water crews are working to repair a second water main break on Cameron Street in the city’s Village District.

Drivers headed to the area should seek alternate routes. The 2000 block of Cameron Street is closed to through traffic between Daniels Street and Woodburn Street to ensure safety. The closure is expected to last until 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 29.

The break occurred about 10 feet from Monday’s initial break, which caused a big sinkhole. The sinkhole was filled, and the road was reopened at 5 p.m. Monday. Breaks close together are not uncommon, said Kimberly Holmes-Iverson, spokesperson for Raleigh Water.

The city of Raleigh replaced the entire 25-foot section, which was originally installed in the 1948, after finding other weak spots which should lead to a “more durable solution.”

“This particular older pipe is made of cast iron, which is a brittle material,” she said. “It’s similar to an old porcelain plate: once it starts to crack, it becomes more prone to breaking in other spots.”

This incident is not currently affecting water service for Raleigh Water customers.

The utility’s infrastructure includes built-in redundancies, allowing water to be rerouted through other pipes and pathways during repairs, according to a city news release. This design ensures continuous service even when isolated issues occur.
